Jack, who wants to pursue a career in the restaurant trade, is working at the restaurant three times a week and is thoroughly enjoying it. Congratulation to our year 8 student, Billy, on his amazing ice hockey achievements. Billy and his team, Leeds Junior Knights Ice Hockey Team, recently won the league and national competition for under 14s. He trains three times a week and has done since primary school. His commitment and determination has been rewarded and we are all so proud of him! In a few weeks he and his team will be facing a tournament with a European team and in the summer they’ll face teams from America. Well done Billy and Leeds Junior Knights.

Our student librarians had an incredible visit to the world-famous Chetham’s Library in Manchester, the oldest public library in Britain, open to all since 1653 and in continuous use for over 350 years. The day began with a trip to Waterstones, where students used their £10 vouchers to pick out books, followed by a meal at the Arndale Centre, before touring the historic library. Pupils learnt about Humphrey Chetham’s vision of making education and access to books available to everyone.

Our annual talent content, ‘BCHS Has Got Talent’, was a huge success again this year and we were bowled over with the wealth of talent we have at school. The judges found it so hard to choose the three winners. Each of these talented individuals brought their unique brilliance to the stage and their performances were nothing short of spectacular! A selection of our female year 8 students took part in a team event for Cyber First Girls, run by the National Cyber Security Centre. They were put into teams of four and had to tackle challenges from cryptography and logic, to artificial intelligence and networking, for the chance to be crowned cyber security champions. All of our students worked amazingly as part of a team and we are so proud to announce that the girls qualified in the top 10 in the North West. Well done to all of them, what an achievement!

A student at Blackburn Central High School has secured himself a part time job with a renowned Michelin star chef. Sol, a year 11 hospitality student at BCHS, has aspirations to become a chef when he leaves school. To aid him on his career path, his hospitality teacher, Mr McCrone, has helped to secure him a part time job at The Three Fishes in Mitton, with Michelin star and Lancashire chef, Nigel Haworth. Attendance Matters At BCHS we place a lot of emphasis on good attendance because it underpins a child’s future achievement, self-confidence and aspiration. As a reward for 100% attendance over a six-week period last term, 30 children were selected at random to go on a fully funded trip to visit Manchester Science and Industry Museum, which included a visit to the highly anticipated Power Up exhibition. The experience was not only enriching but also incredibly fun, making it a memorable day for everyone involved. Oak Learning Partnership has a number of mainstream and special schools in Bury and Blackburn with Darwen and shares our ethos that inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. Year 11 students were celebrating after receiving some amazing results in their GCSEs. We are thrilled to report that GCSE results day saw an improvement in results and progress score from last year and we must pay particular reference to our Urdu students, where we saw a record number of 12 grade 9s.
