Erin’s amazing achievement

We are delighted to celebrate Erin’s recent achievement of a Grade 4 Distinction in her Performing Arts assessments. The awards from LAMDA are highly prestigious, and Erin works incredibly hard alongside her studies at BCHS, attending a local dance and drama school outside of school hours. To achieve this award, Erin devised and performed an original drama piece, alongside three songs from different genres and a musical theatre performance. Everyone at BCHS is extremely proud of Erin and her dedication, talent and hard work. We look forward to following her future successes — perhaps even an Oscar acceptance speech one…

Young chefs of the year

Aspiring cooks from BCHS joined schools across Lancashire to compete to win the coveted Young Chef of the Year title in a final cook‑off at Blackburn College. Teams from six schools battled it out in the final, preparing mouth‑watering dishes to impress the judges, led by celebrity chef and Great British Menu judge, Lisa Goodwin‑Allen from Michelin‑starred Northcote Hotel and Restaurant. Connected communities

On Monday 5 January, staff from BCHS joined colleagues from across Oak Learning Partnership’s other schools for the annual trust-wide staff conference, held at Bolton Excellency Centre. Around 650 colleagues took part in the day, which focused on the theme ‘Everyone welcome – connected communities: Reaching every learner, supporting every educator’. The conference was a chance for staff to step away from their day-to-day roles, reconnect with colleagues from across the trust and take part in a wide range of CPD sessions. Ice hockey star

Congratulation to our year 8 student, Billy, on his amazing ice hockey achievements. Billy and his team, Leeds Junior Knights Ice Hockey Team, recently won the league and national competition for under 14s. He trains three times a week and has done since primary school. His commitment and determination has been rewarded and we are all so proud of him! In a few weeks he and his team will be facing a tournament with a European team and in the summer they’ll face teams from America. Well done Billy and Leeds Junior Knights.

Students visit world famous library

Our student librarians had an incredible visit to the world-famous Chetham’s Library in Manchester, the oldest public library in Britain, open to all since 1653 and in continuous use for over 350 years. The day began with a trip to Waterstones, where students used their £10 vouchers to pick out books, followed by a meal at the Arndale Centre, before touring the historic library. Pupils learnt about Humphrey Chetham’s vision of making education and access to books available to everyone.

Talent shines through

Our annual talent content, ‘BCHS Has Got Talent’, was a huge success again this year and we were bowled over with the wealth of talent we have at school. The judges found it so hard to choose the three winners. Each of these talented individuals brought their unique brilliance to the stage and their performances were nothing short of spectacular! Cyber First Girls

A selection of our female year 8 students took part in a team event for Cyber First Girls, run by the National Cyber Security Centre. They were put into teams of four and had to tackle challenges from cryptography and logic, to artificial intelligence and networking, for the chance to be crowned cyber security champions. All of our students worked amazingly as part of a team and we are so proud to announce that the girls qualified in the top 10 in the North West. Well done to all of them, what an achievement!

Chef in the making

A student at Blackburn Central High School has secured himself a part time job with a renowned Michelin star chef. Sol, a year 11 hospitality student at BCHS, has aspirations to become a chef when he leaves school. To aid him on his career path, his hospitality teacher, Mr McCrone, has helped to secure him a part time job at The Three Fishes in Mitton, with Michelin star and Lancashire chef, Nigel Haworth. Nigel is a Blackburn lad who has worked in a variety of high-end food establishments, is a published author and has also won Master Chef: The Professionals.…

Attendance Matters

Attendance Matters At BCHS we place a lot of emphasis on good attendance because it underpins a child’s future achievement, self-confidence and aspiration. As a reward for 100% attendance over a six-week period last term, 30 children were selected at random to go on a fully funded trip to visit Manchester Science and Industry Museum, which included a visit to the highly anticipated Power Up exhibition. The experience was not only enriching but also incredibly fun, making it a memorable day for everyone involved.
